Rug Pattern for Painters
Monday, October 15, 2007

An old Garrett rug pattern especially manufactured for the now defunct Tibbett's Paint Factory of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia has been donated to the Hooked Rug Museum of North America by Edward MacArthur of Garrett's By the Bridge Antiques in New Glasgow.

While it was designed to promote the paint company's marketing program at its launching in Newfoundland, the design illustrating paint colors  may never have been actually hooked. The burlap itself was probably reversed and Newfoundland rug hookers likely drew their own designs on the valuable burlap.

It was believed to have been designed by Miller Tibbetts who was a friend of the Garrett family and who actually designed several rugs for them.

Mr MacArthur was actually the last manager of the old Garrett pattern factory and is still intently interested in rug heritage and the work of the Hooked Rug Museum of North America.
