Cape Breton Heads to New York

The unique Cheticamp style of rug hooking, with a colorful new twist added, will be front and centre at the largest United States hooked rug show. A collection of fifty hooked rugs from Cape Breton's Cheticamp and St. Joseph Du Moine area is currently being assembled the 2008 event by Suzanne Conrod, founder of the Nova Scotia based Hooked Rug Museum of North America.

Museum Seeks Help with Early History

While the Garrett family of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia made a significant impact on the early rug hooking of a continent, an earlier family member may have played a role previously unknown. The Hooked Rug Museum Society is appealing for volunteer assistance in the ongoing research into a rug pattern design that appears to reach well back into the mid 1800's and possibly to the very earliest beginnings commercial rug design.

Garrett Family Recognized for Century of Contribution

What may have been the largest manufacturer of hooked rug patterns in the world, the 1892 John E. Garrett Company of New Glasgow, was singled out for special recognition by representatives of the Hooked Rug Museum of North America. In the process, they unveiled some intriguing, previously unknown information about an earlier chapter in Pictou County and Nova Scotia hooked rug design and how it is being saved for posterity.

Garrett Replication Program Ready for Prime Time

They have become an integral part of the story of an amazing art discovery relating to their crafts very early history.

Consultant joins the board

Vermont fire destroys Grenfell artifacts

Fire claimed one life and destroyed a number of important historical artifacts in New Haven, Vermont. The blaze at the Dog Team Tavern completely destroyed the building and all its contents.

Charity registration approved

The Government of Canada has formally approved the museum as a registered charity. This approval was gained in near record time, a matter of weeks instead of the usual four to six months. The speed with which the approval was given is a tribute to the high regard shown for this unique North American project.

The Museum Society

Suzanne Conrod is the Founder and Honorary Chair of the Society. She is the Society's international representative and the liaison to the arts community. Hugh Conrod is the Secretary and chairs the Design Committee and the Government Relations Committee.

Together, they have assembled a Board of Directors who share the vision and are moving the project toward completion. For a complete list of the Directors, see our Contacts Page.
